This time last week it was a mixture of emotions; a nervous excitement after almost a year since our last outing at an outdoor food festival (and that particular event, also here in Filey was, as it turned out the only one in the best part of 18 months), but on the final weekend in June, on the beautiful North Yorkshire coast, we were back!
But after so long away and in a very different landscape, would the public support it? Was it too soon? Were we ready to get our festival heads on again? Would it rain?! We also had for the first time at an event of this scale our four new products to unleash on our customers; a fine new range of chutney’s having previously been known only for our piccalilli’s (albeit very good piccalillis!).
As it turned out we needn’t have worried. The sun shone from the off, the crowds flocked along the see front (as did the seagulls) and it was a truly epic and slightly emotional return to trading at a large public event.
We were blown away by the response of our customers and the general public. Some had managed to find us online and it was lovely meeting the people behind the names we recognised from a ping on our Shopify store, from places such as Grimsby, Doncaster, Bridlington, Beverly and Goole! Other’s had replenished at the local farm shop or butchers (we managed to call in at @redcliffefarmshop and @trotterspork en route to the festival to say hello and stock them up). Among our very first customers on Saturday morning was a gentleman who hadn’t managed to find us in the last 11 months and even though we told him about the shops and the website, he was taking no chances and bought two cases – 12 jars of Piccalilli to put away – just in case!
The final story to share and to conclude our blog – we want to tell you about Doreen and Gordon and share a short story with you. We met this lovely couple about 3 years ago, they’ve bought our Piccalilli, helped spread the word and been nothing but lovely on each occasion we’ve met them. Every October we go back for the Autumn festival which coincides with Doreen and Gordon’s wedding anniversary (we think it was a big one that first year) and we like to give them a little freebie, it’s become customary. Last year, we couldn’t make it to Filey so we put our a plea on Facebook in an attempt to reach the local community with the objective of finding them to post out their Piccalilli. Sadly, despite several hundred views, likes, shares and a boost to try and increase our chances, all efforts were in vein. But on Saturday, we were reunited when they visited our stall and they got to receive their 2020 pickle stash. Most importantly of all, they were fit and well and just as happy to see us again!
A great weekend was had, a massive shout and high five to the organisers at Scarborough Council for pulling it together and we can’t wait to be back again in August.
Keep an eye out for our latest blog and be in with a chance to win tickets to the Foodies Festival at Tatton Park, Cheshire later this month.
