Charlie's original piccalilli recipe, in his own hand.
The recipe that started it all
In 2015, the Calder family rediscovered Grandad Charlie's original piccalilli recipe and decided to give it a go.
They quickly realised they'd uncovered something special: proper piccalilli, the way it used to be, from a time when a jar sat in every family pantry. Made with the very vegetables Charlie grew in his own back garden and greenhouse.
In their own words
Real people, real jars. Here's what they had to say.
“I've never liked Piccalilli until today.”
“The best I've ever tasted.”
“The best Piccalilli I've ever had.”
“The nicest Piccalilli I've tasted in my existence.”
“Buy this, it's amazing!”
“The best Piccalilli ever.”
“Gave it to my son, and he said it's the best piccalilli he's ever tasted.”
It started in Grandad Charlie's kitchen
Calder's began in the 1950s, when Grandad Charlie started making pickles in his kitchen for family and neighbours, a milkman from South Shields with a serious knack for flavour.
We still follow the same spirit today: bold flavours, small batches and proper ingredients. Every jar is made in his memory, just as he made it.
