Calder's Kitchen was formed by the Cadler family in 2015 after discovering Grandad Charlie's original Piccalilli recipe, making it in his memory and uncovering something amazing! Charlie was a milkman and lived most of his life in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, serving his country in the Second World War. A passoinate cook and family man, we now make each flavour in our range in Grandad's memory using vegetables he used to grow in his back garden and cook with himself.
At Calder’s Kitchen, everything starts with family. A recipe that began in our own kitchen has grown into a much-loved brand known for its bold flavours, quality ingredients, and deep-rooted values.
Our story isn’t just about pickles and preserves – it’s about people, place, and partnerships. Our success has grown from a genuine love for local heritage, and a belief that great food has the power to connect communities and create memorable experiences.
From our earliest days at local farmers’ markets to national award recognition, our mission has remained the same: to bring authentic, artisan products to food lovers across the UK, while staying true to our roots.
We started making Piccalilli in our family kitchen after discovering Andrew's late Granddad, Charlie's favourite family recipe and deciding to 'give it a go'.
We realised very quickly that we had uncovered an incredible hidden gem - Proper Piccalilli the way it used to be, from a time when it was a staple in most family pantries.
Two further variations on the traditional recipe followed; Chillililli which has a delicious medium strength sweet chilli glow and Sillylilli - Hot, Indian spiced Piccalilli (Andrew's favourite which he now eats with pretty much everything!).
We currently have seven core flavours, available all year around with the occasional guest chutney and more new products in the pipeline for 2025. Our best sellers remain our original three core products: Charlie's Perfect Piccalilli, Chillililli and Sillylilli.
We now stock around 150 independent food and drink shops and cover a wide range of foodie events across the year, also popping up at some of the North East's favourite family destinations such as Beamish The Living Museum of the North, Hopetown in Darlington, The Alnwick Gardens and St Aidan's Winery on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
Finally, we should mention the multiple awards we have won over the years including a Great Taste Awards in 2016, 2022, and 2024, Farm Shop and Deli awards in 2023 & 2024 and Great British Food & Drink awards in 2021 and 2024.
We welcome trade enquiries from interested shops, garden centres, cafe's, pubs, restaurants or anyone who sells and appreciates great food.

We take pride in our values which are providing quality, fresh and unique flavours, hard work and making our customers smile.
After initially giving our first batch to family and friends to try and receiving great feedback, we used started to sell hampers at Christmas to raise money for a school in Tanzania, East Africa.
We later developed two variations on the traditional recipe, Chillililli which has a delicious medium strength sweet chilli glow and later, the slightly naughty spicy Sillylilli (Andrew's favourite which he now eats with, well pretty much everything!).
